So, here's the deal: I just don't like movies. I am pretty sure the last movie I proactively went to see was Free Willy, back when I had posters from Zoobooks Magazine all over my bedroom walls and was positive I would grow up to be a veterinarian, not the Professional Nerd that I have instead grown up to be. (Though after reading that sentence, it is painfully apparent that I was a professional nerd far before I grew up...)
I realize this distaste for one of America's favorite pass-times may be hard for you, as a normal person, to understand. Please review the clip below for a glimpse into my feelings toward most movies:
When asked about movies, I generally get a deer-in-the-headlight look and hope the inquisitor doesn't ask me too much because, let's be honest, it's weird to not like movies. It's ok, you don't have to lie and pretend it isn't. I've seen the look. I say "I don't really like them that much" or "I don't watch movies" and your face says "Does she still live in her parents' basement, playing World of Warcraft with her collection of taxidermied cats into the wee hours? And how the hell did this one get a wedding ring? Who marries someone that doesn't like movies? OMG, Is she going to murder us?" It's similar to not liking baseball (which I also hate...) or Star wars (just kill me...) - kind of unAmerican.
If the conversation continues in the way of movies, I just nod and smile, pretending I know what you are talking about. The worst part (and it *always* happens) is when mid-smile/nod the person says "Oh! You've seen that one?" and I have to admit that I haven't and I'm just nodding in hopes that they will quickly change the topic of conversation to something where I could participate or add value such as math or analogies (I'm really good at analogies!) or any number of interesting facts I learned as a child from Zoobooks Magazine.
In any case, my goal here is to give movies a chance. I'm all about being fair, and maybe in the past 10 years the 15 or so movies I have seen are not a good representation of what is out there. Clearly I'm casting judgement without having enough information to form a solid opinion on the matter and that is a major pet peeve of mine. So this year, I will watch movies. I can't guarantee one a week but I'm on board for one per month and maybe more. Do I want input on what to watch? Yes, absolutely. I need help. Maybe then we can turn this ship around. There's a form on the left. Please advise.
